Chartered Accountant
I am Deepak Soni, a Chartered Accountant based in Bangalore with more than four years of experience across FP&A, financial modeling, fundraising, and strategic business consulting.
I cleared every level of the Chartered Accountancy examinations on my first attempt, with exemptions in four of six subjects at the Final level. Since then I have spent my career on core finance and capital teams, building financial infrastructure from the ground up at Rentomojo, a high growth consumer tech startup.
First attempt Chartered Accountant
Cleared CA Foundation, Intermediate and Final on the first try.
Across those roles I have worked closely with a business carrying a substantial asset base and revenue, including hands on involvement in equity and debt fundraising, board reporting, and investor relations.
Rentomojo, 2022 to present. Industrial Trainee, then Manager in the Capital and Resourcing team, and currently Consultant. Earlier, article assistant roles in taxation and audit at two CA firms.
Working across these mandates taught me something that shapes how I practise. Most finance problems are not really number problems.
They are interpretation problems. A dashboard can look healthy and still be misleading. A trend can look alarming and mean almost nothing. My job is to close that gap.
I bring the rigour of a CFO and the agility of an independent advisor, helping founders and leadership teams build financial frameworks that genuinely drive decisions.

I work where finance, technology and economics meet.
Finance, the foundation
Chartered Accountant training gives me accounting depth and audit grade discipline. Four plus years across FP&A, budgeting, financial modeling, DCF valuation, board reporting, variance analysis, and DRHP and IPO readiness work.
Technology, the engine
I build. Power BI, SQL, Python and Metabase are part of my daily toolkit. I automated depreciation and PO approval workflows, ran revenue reconciliation across two systems, and bridged finance and tech through a full systems overhaul.
Economics, the lens
Unit economics, cost optimisation, and capital allocation. I built a company first sub category performance model for granular insight, ran TAM research, and supported equity and debt fundraising decisions.
Most finance professionals live comfortably inside one of these circles, and a few reach into a second. The work that genuinely moves a business forward happens where all three overlap, and that intersection is where I operate.

Profitability and Insight · Consumer Business
Product wise P&L: turning a single point of margin into a ₹6 crore insight
The business measured profit only at the company level, so leadership could see whether money was being made overall, but not which products were making it and which were quietly eroding it. I built a product wise profit and loss statement that allocated revenue, cost of goods, and overheads down to each product line. Once profitability was visible at that level, the picture changed completely. The analysis showed how sensitive the bottom line was to gross margin, and that a movement of just half a percentage point in gross margin translated into roughly ₹6 crore of impact.

Revenue, COGS and overhead allocation by product
The Problem
Profit was only ever viewed at the company level. Strong products and weak products were blended into a single number, so pricing and product mix decisions were being made without knowing which lines actually carried the business.
What I Built
A product wise P&L that allocated revenue, cost of goods, and overheads to each product line, then pressure tested how the bottom line responded to small changes in gross margin across the portfolio.
The Insight
A half percentage point swing in gross margin was worth close to ₹6 crore. Leadership could finally see which products to protect, which to reprice, and where margin was leaking unnoticed.
Key Outcome
Turned a single blended profit figure into product level clarity, and quantified exactly how much a small margin movement was worth, giving leadership a precise basis for pricing and product mix decisions.

Power BI intelligence suite for depreciation automation and multi year revenue analytics
A growing D2C retail business was managing depreciation schedules and four years of revenue data across a patchwork of manual Excel files. There was no automation, no single source of truth, and the finance team spent days every month simply reconciling numbers before any real analysis could begin. I designed and built a consolidated Power BI intelligence suite that replaced the entire manual stack.

Multi source data unified in one model

Manual depreciation calculations remaining
The Problem
Forty eight months of revenue data sat fragmented across separate Excel files totalling 2 to 3 GB. Depreciation for more than 6 lakh assets was calculated by hand each period, which was slow, error prone, and impossible to audit at scale.
What I Built
A Power BI model that ingested, cleaned, and unified every source file. Depreciation logic was automated with DAX measures that were schedule driven, asset class aware, and period accurate. The revenue dashboard added year on year, month on month, and trend views.
Technology Used
Power BI Desktop, Power Query with the M language for data transformation, and DAX for depreciation automation and KPI calculations. The model was optimised to handle multi gigabyte source files without performance loss.
Key Outcome
Manual depreciation calculations were eliminated entirely across more than 6 lakh assets. Leadership gained a live, drill through view of four years of revenue, and work that once took days of Excel effort became a real time dashboard refresh.
In Preparation
Sub Category Performance Model
A company first sub category model that broke business performance into granular segments, giving leadership a level of insight the previous reporting could not reach.
In Preparation
MIS Standardisation and PO Automation
Standardised MIS reporting that cut preparation time by 60 percent, and a Power BI driven PO approval workflow that saved 90 percent of the time in every cycle.

Your dashboard looks healthy. Your business might not be.
Most finance dashboards are built to look reassuring. Green numbers, upward arrows, tidy charts. But a comforting dashboard and a healthy business are not the same thing. Here is how to tell the two apart.
The product wise P&L most growing businesses never build.
Company level profit tells you whether you made money. It does not tell you which products made it for you, and which ones quietly lost it. Building a product wise P&L is one of the highest leverage moves a growing business can make.
What founders get wrong about their first financial model.
A financial model is not a forecasting exercise, it is a thinking tool. Most first models are too detailed in the wrong places and too vague in the places investors actually care about. Here is how to fix that.
